When people ask me which guitar to buy, I tell them to:
Listen to a Carter.
Play a Carter.
Price a Carter.
Carry a Carter. At the Northwest Pedal Jam in October 1998, I gave the Carters a stage road test, loud, in your face, turned up and turned on. Others told me they liked what they heard.
A few weeks later (November 1998) I bought a Carter. I gave up a very good sounding '66 Emmons Push-Pull for it. I do not regret it. I love the George L's TPP pickups on my Carter.
A player friend of mine came to hear me recently, he said the Carter tone seemed to have its own place in the sound of the band -- cleaner and more distinct than my P-P.
The first time I remember hearing a Carter was at the Steel Guitar Jamboree in Dallas, when I was standing in the hallway checking out the usual steel paraphernalia. I heard the most unbelievable steel sound coming from the convention hall. I actually ran into the concert room and to the stage, there I found Bud Carter playing.
Bud's tone, string separation, sustain, and cleanliness just knocked me out. I had never heard all of these characteristics coming from any one guitar before. After that, when others expressed interest in purchasing a new guitar, I would always tell them, "Before you buy, do yourself a favor, listen to a Carter."
Thanks again from a "died-in-the-wool Push-Pull freak". So glad I made the jump. I am enjoying my Carter D-10. It plays great and sustains for a week.
And, thank you John, Ann, and Bud for your friendship, your service, and my beautiful guitar.
