Dear John, Bud, and Ann:
I have had my Carter D-10 BCT for several months now.
You know, I'm not one of those people who can say, "I've played them all, and the Carter is my favorite," because I have not played them all. I'm not a professional player and never will be.
In fact, the Carter is the only modern, all-pull steel I have played, except for one Sierra when I visited the Sierra shop in Portland back in '94. I started with a crummy, rented Sho-Bud Maverick, then an Emmons push-pull extended E9th 12-string. That was a nice guitar, sounded great, played well, but I found the push-pull mechanism very difficult to keep in tune and keep adjusted.
When I went to the steel guitar show in Concord, California, in '93 I decided I wanted to buy a modern, all-pull guitar. I had gotten material from several manufacturers, including Sierra. I thought the Sierra guitars looked very good, but the price was prohibitive. Then, I visited the Carter exhibit in Concord, played a couple of guitars, liked the feel, liked the price and ordered one. I enjoyed that Carter for many years.
When I decided to buy a double-10, I had been reading all the debates about which guitar sounds best, plays best, etc. Everyone seems to like his/her own steel the best, maybe because everyone wants to think he/she made the right choice. They're all good; the technology has come a long way.
So, I bought another Carter, because I could get a beautiful, well-made, easily-adjustable and modifiable guitar for a very reasonable price, as new steels go, from people who actually talk to you on the phone and whose after-the-sale service is legendary. How could I go wrong?
Cheers,
Alan Shank
