John, Ann, and Bud,
I've had my Carter about 9 months and I really love it. In fact, I play my Carter exclusively now because it sounds so much better than my others. It ain't just me. My Singers say: "Please bring the 'red one'." My "rocker" son said recently, "I don't know what you did, but you sound better than you ever have."
I thought that playing a single neck could take some getting used to, but it feels more comfortable to me. Originally, I only ordered the single neck Carter so I could haul it on ships and elevators, but I got the best steel that anyone could ask for!
Of interest: I can half-pedal my "A" pedal a lot easier on the Carter. It gets a good workout. A recent weekend (fairly typical): we played an Officer's Club up north on Friday night, an outdoor carnival on Saturday afternoon, and then way up north to a resort on Saturday night. Me and Ma stayed overnight up there and then I played in a Japanese department store on Sunday afternoon. And, as usual: my Carter stayed in tune ALL weekend!
In the past 25 years, the steels I've purchased were:
- 1975: used MSA
- 1977-1983: 2 Sho-Buds
- 1984-1994: My beloved new MSA D-10 which has been shipped to Scotty. I loved the sound and playing it for so long was the main reason I went with Carter this time.
- 1994 - 1997: Mullen D-10, which is a fine instrument, still have it.
- 1997 - Eternity: My new Carter S-10, which is the first one to come with an Owner's Manual. It's a nice manual and it's very nice of you to include it.
Other things I really like are the inclusion and packaging of the wrench kit and string winder (which is very thoughtful), as well as all of the reading stuff. The case is nice, too.
As for the Carter Steel itself, the endplate-tunable half-stop for the 2nd string was a nice surprise. It's handy and accurate to boot. The tuning keys feel good and firm. The TPP pickup is quiet. It's comfortable to play, looks good and sounds good. What else could a guy ask for? When I sound better, I play with more heart.
Whenever people ask me about steels, I'll tell them that there is only one to consider: "Carter". Well, I just wanted to let you know that I love it. You folks run a hell of a company and I sure appreciate it!
Mucho arrigato,
Clyde "Bones" Rathbone
