Carter Steel Guitars Presents:

"Be Yourself When Playing PSG"

by Buddy Emmons

Considered by many to be the
World's Greatest Pedal Steel Guitar Player,
Buddy Emmons has appeared in numerous
venues and played on countless recordings and is
currently appearing with the "Everly Brothers" in gigs around world.

"One of the comments I receive from Mr. and Mrs. average Everly Brother audience is, 'I enjoyed watching you. You seem to really enjoy what you're doing.' I believe if you feel good about the music you're playing, you'll pass that feeling off to the audience without having to work on it.

"My most tedious moment of the show is when I'm playing the ending to Gonna Build A Mountain by myself. If I play a clinker during that silent period, you're likely to hear me laugh out loud or say, 'Oh no,' or 'That's not it,' or look at them with a smile and say, 'I'm not through yet.'

"So my advice for engaging an audience is to give them what they ask of anyone under any other circumstances, and that's honesty. Don't worry about making mistakes and don't tie yourself up striving for perfection.

"Play to enjoy. Perfection comes through repetition, a clear head, or three hours on one song in a studio. Half the audience doesn't know when you make a mistake and the others don't know they don't know - so relax and be yourself."
