Bio:
by Dave Sheriff Nashville Tennessee, with whom Derek has recorded numerous times over the years

Derek Thurlby's father made him his first guitar( and several others ) whilst he was still at primary school and started his lifetime fascination for stringed instruments. He progressed to the lap steel guitar and bought his first pedal steel guitar in 1976. He taught himself to play by listening to records featuring players like Buddy Emmons, John Hughey, Pete Drake and Lloyd Green.

Derek's talent was soon noticed and he was asked tp play as a session musician in a band that was formed to provide backing for American artistes at the Wembley International Festival of Country Music including Dave&Sugar,Skeeter Davis,the late Red Sovine, Mac Wiseman (on dobro) and Canadian Ronnie Prophet. This led to a BBC Television Special from Snape Maltings with Pete Sayers which featured Dave & Sugar.

After touring with Country Music living legend, Gene Watson, Derek was offered a position in his American touring band but had to decline due to family commitments.

Derek now works freelance/guest musician with "Talon the Best of Eagles" and is recognised as one of the UK's finest electric and pedal steel guitarists, sharing his time as a session musician or playing at steel guitar festivals.
